THE PROJECT

"MOSAICS OF INCLUSION: DISABLED PEOPLE AND VOLUNTEERS LEARNING TOGETHER" a Grundtvig Learning Partnership under the European Commission's Lifelong Learning Programme. It will have a total duration of 2 years, from August 2013 to July 2015.

General Description

In the introduction to the European Disability Strategy 2010-2020: A Renewed Commitment to a Barrier-Free Europe (COMMUNICATION FROM THE COMMISSION TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, THE COUNCIL, THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COMMITTEE AND THE COMMITTEE OF THE REGIONS) it is stated: "Full economic and social participation of people with disabilities is essential if the EU’s Europe 2020 strategy is to succeed in creating smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Building a society that includes everyone also brings market opportunities and fosters innovation" and subsequently "Policy and regulatory frameworks do not reflect the needs of people with disabilities adequately, neither do product and service development. Many goods and services, as well as much of the built environment, are still not accessible enough. The economic downturn has had an adverse impact on the situation of people with disabilities, making it all the more urgent to act. This Strategy aims to improve the lives of individuals, as well as bringing wider benefits for society and the economy".

These are the reflections that inspired our "Mosaics of Inclusion - Disabled People and Volunteers Learning Together" and stimulated its creation as a means to realize a compared analysis of the missing pieces in social incusion in 4 different European Countries involving actively the disabled people in this process, giving voice to their needs and suggestions, and making them avare of their power to produce a change. The contribution of stakeholders, staff and volunteers will enrich this process and will create a reciprocal learning, laying the foundations for a real inclusion. We are going to try to lay down some both mental and phisycal barriers with particular attention to the fruition of art and culture (visits to the real artistical mosaic in each city involved), the creation of mobility opportunities for disabled people, stimulating the diffusion of an immage of the disabled as a capable person with several resourses (creation of mosaics, research for hidden mosaics and their description, creation of report about their lifestyle) through the learning process that characterizes the project.

The exchange of methods, good practices and approaches in the realization of social inclusion among the partners, will lead to the creation of an innvative shared approach enriched from the opportunity to understand the social policy in the different European Countries and the discovering of missing pieces and good practices.

The practical connection to the art and manufacture of mosaics in the project will allow to implement a learning process on culture and art for the participants and will introduce new kind of inclusive activities for the disabled learners  in the ordinary work of each partner organizations (workshop on mosaics manufacture and cultural visits where the disabled people themselves act as guides in relation to their artistical interest).
